Our Science Girls! Summer Camp is featured in this week’s Roanoke Times!
“With more than a dozen boisterous elementary school students and plenty of interactive lessons, it looked like summer camp as usual, but something was missing.
The girls-only camp, new this year, is intended to get young women interested in the sciences. “Science Girls! Summer Camp” runs this week and includes experiments and female scientists as guest speakers.
“The underlying premise of doing this at all is that we believe that there may be some cultural or ingrained stereotypes we all carry with us about who can do what,” said Jim Rollings, the museum’s executive director.
Organizers hope that having the camp for girls will remove any cultural preconceptions and get young women excited about science and thinking about careers in STEM.”
