Hello, Summertime!

School is winding to a close and our educators are working hard to prepare fun and fascinating activities for our summer camps. With the beginning of summer comes the beginning of the extended summer hours for the museum. Starting on June 5th, the Science Museum of Western Virginia will once again be open to the public on Mondays. We look forward to seeing our guests seven days a week and giving your children a wonderful experience during our camps!

  • Monday-Saturday 10 am – 5 pm
  • Sunday 1 pm – 5 pm

We have amazing camps all summer long for all ages! Please visit our Summer Camps page for the full listing. This year we are offering to pack lunches for you! For a small additional fee, the museum will provide a lunch and snacks for your camper.

We have also expanded our Middle School summer camp offerings this year:

Science Girls (July 5-7)

This camp is just for girls and seeks to engage young women in STEM learning. Meet a variety of female STEM professionals as they conduct exciting hands-on activities and to tell their stories of pursuing careers in STEM fields. We will also spend a day at the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg to work with some of the STEM professionals in their labs. (Food is not provided, so be sure to send a lunch, two snacks, and a water bottle with your Science Girl each day.) Click here to register for Science Girls.

Board Game Design (July 5-7)

Think beyond the board and discover the math and science at the core of board games. Dive deep into the how and why of board game design through discussions, analysis and of course, play testing. Discuss games and game mechanics with people in the board gaming industry! In the end you will leave with a prototype of a game you design. (Food is not provided, so be sure to send a lunch, two snacks, and a water bottle with your Gamer each day.) Click here to register for Board Game Design.

So You Want to Be a Doctor (July 17-21)

Explore medical careers and research in this exciting camp that will travel throughout Roanoke and beyond. Visit with medical professionals and engage in hands-on activities to discover what their days are like.  We will visit VT Medical School, Jefferson College of Health Sciences, VTCRI, and more. (Food is not provided, so be sure to send a lunch, two snacks, and a water bottle with your Doctor-in-training each day.) Click here to register for So You Want to Be a Doctor.

Musical Robot Orchestra (July 24-28)

Led by Dr. Ico Bukvic from Virginia Tech’s Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology, Musical Robots Orchestra is a 5-day maker workshop that will explore the design and creation of musical instruments that are capable of playing by themselves and in consort with other nearby instruments. The workshop will involve ideation, design, creative coding and connecting computers with various sensors and devices designed to produce sound and music. At the end of the workshop the resulting musical robots will have an opportunity to perform together as an orchestra. No prior coding experience is required.  (Food is not provided, so be sure to send a lunch, two snacks, and a water bottle with your Musician/Programmer each day.)
