Dr. Vernon Mountcastle

It is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Dr. Vernon Mountcastle.

Dr. Vernon Mountcastle, formerly of Roanoke and a Roanoke College alumnus, made fundamental discoveries in neuroscience.  He died Sunday at his Baltimore home at age 96.  Dr. Mountcastle is the great uncle of one of the Science Museum of Western Virginia’s current Board members, Bobby Mountcastle.

“The Science Museum is honored to have Dr. Mountcastle’s legacy reflected on one of our exhibits, ‘On the Shoulders of Giants.‘  We express our appreciation for his contributions to neuroscience and send condolences to the Mountcastle family at this time.” said Jim Rollings, museum executive director.
