Science Museum of Western Virginia sadly announces the passing of one of our favorite special event headliners and an American hero. Dr. Edgar Mitchell, of 1971’s Apollo 14 and 6th man to walk on the moon, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2016 in West Palm Beach area in Florida.

The Science Museum had the privileged of hosting Dr. Mitchell in September 2013 at their first fundraiser upon returning to downtown location. Dr. Mitchell gladly accepted the three day invitation. He spoke to a private group at Virginia Tech, then came to Roanoke for a couple of private events and a public presentation and Q&A session.

Quote from Palm Beach Post: “Astronaut Edgar D. Mitchell, who was part of the Apollo 14 space crew that flew to the moon in 1971, died late Thursday in West Palm Beach, according to his family.

Mitchell, 85, lived in suburban Lake Worth and died at a local hospice at about 10 p.m. Thursday, his daughter, former West Palm Beach City Commissioner Kimberly Mitchell told The Palm Beach Post.”

Thank you Dr. Mitchell for your service to our country and providing many memories for our members, staff, and community!
