I love it.
I grew up in a home that emphasized the importance of giving back to our community, one that we are proud to live in. We are so fortunate to have a beautiful new Science Museum and, when the opportunity came up to be a part of it, I simply couldn’t say no. I also made sure that my mom and boyfriend couldn’t say no, either.
Together, the three of us volunteer almost every Saturday and it is something that we look forward to all week. We spend time talking about our experiences from the weekend prior, what’s new for this weekend, and, in the case of said boyfriend, what new experiments he’s tried for the Open Lab.
It’s an easy and rewarding way to spend time with people I love, doing something I love to do. Volunteering for the Science Museum lets me interact with guests from all over and make their experience here in Roanoke a great one. Not only is the work rewarding, but we are truly part of the team! Whether it’s a personal thank you or a special visit from the Deb’s Lemonade Truck, the staffs make us feel so appreciated.
One of my favorite places to spend time is with the Living River Touch Tank. Here you can get some hands-on experience with some of our favorite ocean critters. It’s a blast to see a child go from, “Oh, I’m not touching that!” to leaving with pruney fingers from touching everything. You can watch get them brave, see how fun it is to touch that first sea star and realize just how cool they are!
I also love spending time in the Butterfly Garden. We get to see a lot of people. At first, I was a bit nervous about all of these flying insects, but the Animal Care team has done an awesome job of making me feel at home and giving me lots of great information to answer questions. It’s always so much fun to see people appreciating how beautiful and delicate the butterflies are, but also getting to learn about them and why they are so important.
Overall, I am so glad to be a part of something so important to our valley. Volunteering at the Science Museum is a great way to give back, meet people, and be a part of our community.
